The Project

In January of 2009, the Msgr. Gerdes Knights of Columbus approached Fr. Bill with an offer to provide some service to St. Bernadette as part of the K of C yearly service program. After consideration, Fr. Bill requested that work be done to restore the grotto, taking care to closely represent the shrine in Lourdes. An altar was to be built, and a small fountain with bubbling water. General cleanup was needed as well. The Knights provided some funding but more was needed. After an appeal in the bulletin, generous parishioners at St. Bernadette donated the remaining needed funds. In May of 2009, renovation work began.

Another appeal was made to adopt flower beds in the grotto, as many hands would make the care of the flower beds practical. Again, the parishioners of St. Bernadette responded.

On Monday, July 13, 2009 a Thanksgiving Mass was held in the grotto. The purpose of the mass was to give glory to God and much gratitude to St. Bernadette Soubirous, who surely interceded for the parish in making our new church possible. We thank the Virgin Mary as well for her intercession to accomplish this blessed undertaking.
